  Students intensify protest, over 40 injured

KATHMANDU, Aug 24 - Scores of students were injured during protests against hike in the price of petroleum products at various government-run colleges in the Valley Wednesday.

Students in Shakerdev Campus, Putalisadak took to the street as early as 8 in the morning today. Students pelted stones at the riot police to which the latter responded by firing at least a dozen tear gas shells. Several pedestrians were also affected by the teargas firing.

The irate students also burnt a government-owned vehicle in front of Amrit Science Campus at Lainchaur this afternoon.

Student activist Kamalesh Mishra was seriously injured in clashes with the riot police.

More than 40 other protesters including student leaders Santosh Bhatta, Saroj Kumar Thapa and Ganesh Devkota were injured during the clashes with the police.

Traffic was disrupted for nearly three hours in front of Shankardev Campus and Tri-Chandra Campus this afternoon.

Tension in Rajbiraj

A person unconnected with ongoing student protests sustained injury when police fired shots to disperse protesters during a demonstration in Rajbiraj Wednesday.

Three students were critically wounded and eight were arrested in the incident

According to a report from Rajbiraj, Mahesh Bhagat, a local resident of Triyuga Municipality-2, Udayapur, sustained a bullet injury on his leg.

Bhagat, who had come to take care of his pregnant wife at the local hospital, was himself admitted in the hospital.

Police opened fire as soon as protesters reached Neta Chowk, blocking the road and shouting anti-government slogans.

Samir Jha, president of Free Students' Union (FSU) of Mahendra Bindeswori Multiple Campus; Ghanananda Yadav, ex-secretary of FSU and an unidentified youth were wounded seriously in the police batons charge.

The situation was tense after the firing. In retaliation, students shut down Rajbiraj. (dds/snn)
